Frequently Ask Questions about Bathroom Vanities

There are a ton of questions surrounding bathroom vanities cabinets, sinks, medicine cabinets, mirrors, etc. Below are answers to some of the more frequently asked questions. Browse through them and find the answer you're looking for.

What styles of bathroom vanity cabinets, sinks, mirrors, etc. are available?
Bathroom vanities and furnishings come in many different styles. Today, the dominant styles include:
  • Contemporary
  • Modern
  • Antique
  • Wood
  • Marble
  • Metal and Glass
How do I measure for bathroom vanity cabinets?
The dimensions you need to consider when measuring for a new bathroom vanity are the length, the depth (i.e. how far it can stick out), and the height (how high you want it to be). Be sure to take into consideration molding and cabinet doors when measuring. They often require additional space for placement and movement.

Do all bathroom vanity cabinets come with mirrors and sinks?
Each vanity is different. Some are a complete package and come with a sink, mirror, and cabinetry. However, others just include the cabinets which require you to purchase the sink and mirrors separately. When shopping around, be sure to ask what comes with the vanity. The display at the store might have everything in place, but it doesn't mean they're included in the price of the cabinets.

Can I purchase bathroom vanities and other accessories online?
Absolutely! The Internet is a great place to shop for bathroom vanity cabinets, sinks, mirrors, medicine cabinets, and complete vanity sets. In fact, it's often easier to find discount vanities online than it is to find them in the local stores.

How do I install a bathroom vanity?
Installing a bathroom vanity requires some level of skill - mainly because you need to consider plumbing for the sink as well. Most cabinets come in one piece or just a few pieces that are easy to assemble. If you measured correctly, installing it shouldn't be a problem. If you're new at bathroom vanity installation it's better to consult an expert first than attempt it yourself. Ask the store you purchased your vanity from if they recommend an expert. It will save you time and aggravation.

How do I install/integrate a mirror with my vanity?
In some cases the mirror is part of the vanity and attaching it is pretty self explanatory (i.e. consult installation instructions). However, some vanities don't have a mirror incorporated into their design. So, what you need to do is decide if you want a medicine cabinet or just a plain mirror. Medicine cabinets can be sunk in the wall or mounted directly onto it. Mirrors obviously are just mounted on the wall. So, here's what you do:
  1. For a standard mirror: figure out the type/style of mirror you want and determine if you want the mirror to cover the wall from corner to corner or just be centered.

  2. For a medicine cabinet: if you want to sink the cabinet into the wall, make sure you have the space to do it. Consult a carpenter to make this determination. If you just want the cabinet mounted on the wall and NOT sunk in, find the center of the vanity and place it on the wall accordingly.
