Bathroom Remodeling - Large or Small Project

Whether you enjoy remodeling your home or dread the thought of it, there comes a time when the tile in the bathroom is beyond repair, the fixtures have seen better days, and your bathroom furniture is threadbare. When that time comes, the first question to ask yourself is: can all this be spruced up with a small bathroom remodeling project or do I need to pull everything out and start from scratch?

When to Consider a Small Bathroom Remodeling

Time and money are usually the two biggest constraints when you decide to upgrade your bathroom design. Each is a very valid concern and you can be address both with a budget.

• Financial Constraints - Calculate how much money you can reasonably set aside for your bathroom. With the money you have, decide whether replacing one large fixture, like your bathroom vanity, will improve your bathroom more than replacing the counter top, light fixtures, and accessories. By budgeting ahead of time for what will legitimately improve your bathroom as opposed to starting on whatever seems the easiest, you will greatly improve the results of your home remodeling project.
  
  
• Time Constraints - Make a budget of how much time you will be able to devote to your home improvement project. You may only have time to re-tile the shower or replace the faucet. You may even have to hire someone to install your toilet because of time constraints, which will also affect your financial budget. You can ask your local hardware store for an estimate on how long each job will take. Make sure to double the time if this is your first time doing this kind of project to account for mistakes or last minute runs to the hardware store for the right screwdriver. It is nicer to have extra time left over than to feel like your bathroom project is taking over your life.

When to Start from Scratch

When time and money are not a concern, you can definitely throw yourself into your bathroom remodeling completely. Another time to consider starting from scratch, no matter what your situation, is if your bathroom had become unsafe because of damaged or rotted fixtures, broken tile, or slippery worn surfaces. Whether you end up doing a large bathroom remodeling or a weekend project, a good plan can help you stay on budget, financially and hourly.
